Dialogues of the Past

Music by Johann Kuhnau and Johann Sebastian Bach, Domenico Scarlatti and Jean Philippe. Rameau, Jean Henry D’Anglebert and Gyorgy Ligeti

Since the beginning of the harpsichord revival at the beginning of the 20th century, harpsichordists have been experimenting with the composition of the concert's program, often creating their own suites. This tradition has faded away – people have heard now so much early music, that such programs can now come across as overly generalised.

Nevertheless, this experimenting has inspired me for this program with three pairs of composers. Some have never met but knew about each other and shared the same job position in different years, some have most probably met and heard each other’s music, and some would never be able to meet – they lived in different centuries.

The deconstruction of the existing suites and placing the music of two composers next to each other creates that musical dialogue which gave the name to the program. Before each of the blocks, I’ll speak about the reasons why I put these composers and pieces together.

This program is accompanied by my comments on the composers and choice of the pieces.
